New ADHD Stimulant Medication Jornay PM Now Available

Jornay PM is the first extended release ADHD stimulant medication dosed in the evening and designed to control ADHD symptoms from daybreak to bedtime. Intended for children 6 years of age and older, Jornay uses a novel drug-delivery system that delays the initial release of the drug for up to 10 hours and then releases the remaining active pharmaceutical ingredient throughout the day.

The new ADHD stimulant medication Jornay PM1 is now available in the United States for children with ADHD 6 years and older.

Jornay capsules are filled with microbeads, each of which has a delayed release and extended release layer. This technology keeps the medication from “kicking in” for up to 10 hours — meaning the effects are felt right when a child wakes up — and then helps it last throughout the day.

Dr. Ann Childress, President of the Center for Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine in Las Vegas, explained why Jornay PM could be a welcome alternative to morning ADHD medications: “Several families I work with have developed a number of creative, but often disruptive strategies, like waking up extra early to take medicine in an attempt to improve the early morning routine.” Taking Jornay PM at night would, according to its manufacturer, alleviate the need for those early-morning medication doses.

For children who experience difficulty swallowing pills, the Jornay PM capsules may be opened and the contents sprinkled onto food.

Jornay PM is a schedule II controlled substance available in 20mg, 40mg, 60mg, 80mg, and 100mg extended release capsules. The most common dosing time in clinical trials is 8 p.m., but timing may be adjusted between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
