7 Ways to Live Your Best Life with ADHD

We are free thinkers who don’t live by the rules, right? Wrong. Sometimes, rules are awesome. Here are a few key ones for stressed-out adults with ADD.

1. Focus on the good.

Stop castigating yourself over the 20% you fumbled. Focus on the 80% you rocked.

2. Make amends.

You forgot a birthday or a date. An apologetic e-mail or phone call goes a long way towards maintaining a friendship.

3. Don’t judge — or be judged.

Your house need not be immaculate before you host company. Friends come to see you, not your home.

And if they do criticize, it might be time to find new friends.

4. Manage your symptoms first.

Schedule that important conversation with your partner right after taking your medication, when symptoms won’t interfere.

5. Learn to laugh.

Next time you forget to set a timer and burn dinner, laugh it off and move on.

Sometimes, humor helps us bounce back from adversity.

6. Say, “No.”

Train yourself to say, “I’ll get back to you on that” before committing.

It can help you avoid over-scheduling and exhaustion.

7. Don’t settle for a bad doctor.

If your clinician brushes off your side effects, or says you ask too many questions, don’t go back.

Your health concerns are too important to be dismissed.
