“How I Learned to Quiet My ADHD Ruminations”

“My ruminations are usually born from a simple thought that bugs me just enough to spur further thought. Soon this little bug-thought grows into a goliath insect that lumbers like a creepy thing beside me for most of my precious time.”

  1. Ruminating is something I have struggled with all my life, leading to anxiety overload. I even became fearful of ruminating, thinking I may be going mad because I couldn’t stop. One day I read a book that described anxiety as your brain trying to warn you there is a problem to protect you. Another article I read stated that anxiety is simply not wanting to feel the emotions we dread. It was eye opening to me one day when I was ruminating and thinking things were going to be a disaster. I then remembered what these men had said. I said to myself, “Thank you brain for looking out for my future safety, but there is nothing wrong “here”, all is well”. I was freed from the rumination and it felt awesome! It’s like we have to manually shift the thought gears in our brain ourselves, it doesn’t work on automatic, it gets stuck in neutral -ruminating.
