School refusal and avoidance have grown more prevalent and problematic since the quarantine of 2020. The reasons behind school refusal and avoidance are different for every student, but the goal is typically the same: to stay at home and miss tests, class work, and homework. From elementary school through high school, absenteeism is growing — and pushing students further and further behind.

Underlying anxiety often propels and compels this behavior, which can present differently in different students — from stomachaches and headaches in some to signs of depression in others. For some students, this anxiety may stem from academic struggles. Students with ADHD may feel overwhelmed if they’re unable to keep up with teacher instruction, class work, and homework. They may also be worn down by years of criticism and correction at school. For others, social difficulties, such as bullying or peer rejection, may cause anxiety and the desire to avoid school.

It’s important for caregivers and educators to understand the underlying causes for each student’s school avoidance and absenteeism so that their individual needs can be addressed, and they can return to school feeling hopeful in a positive environment.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the underlying factors that contribute to school avoidance and absenteeism
  • How these factors may affect students with ADHD, in particular
  • How symptoms of school avoidance can look different across elementary school-age children and teens
  • How to identify and meet the needs of struggling students
  • About the evidence-based strategies that parents and educators can utilize to support students with school refusal behaviors
  • Therapy options to help students transition back to the academic environment

ADHD and autism share many symptoms. Yet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) allowed for ADHD and autism to be diagnosed in the same person only 11 years ago. Before 2013, the DSM did not recognize or allow for a dual diagnosis. Since then, research and clinical understanding of AuDHD have evolved.

However, we still don’t have an evidence-based, standardized approach to diagnosing and supporting adults, women, and gender-diverse individuals with AuDHD. Clinical consensus, stakeholder perspective, and increasing empirical research suggest that ADHD and autism are spectrum conditions that present differently across development and genders, making accurate diagnoses and treatment both challenging and vital.

This presentation will explain the ways in which ADHD and autism overlap and how they can present differently in children and adults — and across genders. In this webinar, you will also learn:

  • About how AuDHD is diagnosed in children and adults
  • How autism can look different from childhood to adulthood and across genders
  • About the association between autism and gender diversity
  • Why autism is so easily missed and misdiagnosed, especially in girls and women, and the consequences of that
  • About the myths and misinformation about autism in adults and girls and women
  • About what your medical and mental health providers need to know and how you can help them make an accurate diagnosis
  • Future directions in diagnosis and treatment

Children and teens with ADHD are most likely to be bullied at school than their neurotypical peers. Why? ADHD symptoms and behaviors like impulsivity, trouble detecting social cues, low self-esteem, and executive function deficits make them easy targets.

What you might not know is that bullying and abuse can physically harm a child’s brain architecture and function. The neurological scars are visible on brain scans.

What’s empowering and inspiring is that all brains benefit from neuroplasticity, which means they are shaped by environment and by practice. Learn about the strategies that can help your child with or without ADHD better cope with and respond to bullies. The more parents, teachers, and coaches understand about how brains may suffer from bullying and abusive conduct, the better equipped they will be to prevent, protect, and respond to these harmful acts.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The ADHD symptoms and behaviors that may make children with the condition a target
  • The different forms of bullying, and the harmful physical impact that each may have on a child’s brain structure and function
  • Strategies and practices to repair the neurological scars from bullying and abuse
  • Practical and actionable interventions for strengthening the brain and restoring holistic health

Despite highly esteemed and plentiful literature on the use of stimulant and nonstimulant medication to treat ADHD, relatively little information is available on the treatment of complex ADHD — that is, attention deficit disorder plus at least one comorbid condition like anxiety, depression, or an eating disorder. Few studies address the treatment of comorbid conditions, the order of treatment, or the treatment of cognitive deficits and/or hard-to-treat ADHD symptoms.

This presentation will integrate data from controlled and open trials to highlight strategies for illustrative cases of complex ADHD. Participants will learn:

  • About new medications approved for ADHD and their use for complex and hard-to-treat ADHD
  • About strategies to manage ADHD comorbidities
  • About approaches for treating cognitive executive function deficits in ADHD

Every month, about a week or two before menstruation, many women with ADHD experience what feels like premenstrual syndrome (PMS) — but on steroids. Symptoms include severe sadness, irritability, anxiety, mood swings, concentration difficulties, fatigue, and physical discomfort. These symptoms significantly disrupt daily life, leading to strained relationships and other difficulties.

If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition affecting individuals who are assigned as female at birth. Despite its profound impact, PMDD often goes unrecognized and untreated.

Register for our webinar with Dara Abraham, D.O., for an in-depth look at PMDD. Discover how to identify symptoms of PMDD, distinguish it from similar cyclical disorders, understand the importance of self-advocacy in healthcare, and learn about the latest advancements in treatment options and the critical need for continued research.

This webinar will delve into the intricate interplay between PMDD and ADHD, scrutinizing the roles of hormones, neurotransmitters, and genetic predispositions in the hormonal fluctuations that activate PMDD symptoms and intensify ADHD. It will underscore the importance of adopting a comprehensive strategy for identifying, diagnosing, and developing individualized treatment plans. Additionally, it will touch upon the importance of recognizing the impact of hormonal changes during key life phases, such as pregnancy and the postpartum period.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About the connection between PMDD and ADHD
  • How to identify the symptoms of PMDD and differentiate it from PMS and other cyclical mood disorders
  • How to recognize individuals at an increased risk of PMDD
  • About PMDD’s association with hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to menopause
  • Comprehensive treatment strategies for PMDD and ADHD, including lifestyle modifications, pharmaceutical interventions, and nutritional support to alleviate symptoms

When we fell in love with the YouTube viral video “Xmas Jammies” 10 years ago, we didn’t know that Penn Holderness had ADHD. Since then, Penn and Kim Holderness, the First Family of ADHD, have regaled us with instant classics including “10 ADHD Lifehacks from Penn,” “Me and My ADHD,” and “How to Listen (Kinda) with ADHD.”

Aside from making us LOL, these witty and endearing videos have showcased the brilliant creativity, mind-blowing energy, and totally unique perspectives that ADHD can bring. ADHD is not 100% awesome, but the Holderness Family is very good at reminding us about the aspects and elements of this condition that do not suck.

In their new book, ADHD is Awesome: A Guide To (Mostly) Thriving With ADHD, Penn and Kim encourage readers to change the narrative around ADHD with something they call Operation Mind Shift. In this webinar, they will discuss…

  • How to blow up the maddening myths about ADHD that persist
  • How to talk to your loved ones about ADHD in a way that educates but doesn’t blame
  • How to reframe your ADHD traits in a way that doesn’t capsize your self-esteem
  • How to model ADHD positivity for your children
  • How to embrace routine and control your environment while remaining zany and fun
  • How to win “The Amazing Race” (just kidding, but they actually did win!)
  • And much more

The increasing decriminalization of cannabis and cannabis-derived products has resulted in greater access to the drug and has reduced perceptions of harm related to frequent cannabis use. These factors are related to escalation of and frequent cannabis use. Despite the limited, federally approved medical uses for cannabis-derived products, cannabis is perceived to be relatively harmless, and to improve insomnia and ADHD symptoms. However, individuals with ADHD may be more vulnerable to developing problematic cannabis use than their neurotypical peers due to ADHD-related traits.

This webinar will examine the research on risks and benefits of cannabis-derived products, specifically regarding how it relates to sleep and ADHD. Sleep is a frequent motive and may be a driver of daily cannabis use. This webinar also will discuss the role of sleep health and substance use, the challenges of communicating these findings to youth who are at greatest risk, and some harm-reduction strategies for engaging youth in reducing drug use.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • Effects of infrequent and frequent cannabis use on cognition
  • Risks of frequent cannabis use among ADHD youth today
  • Sleep disturbances in ADHD, cannabis use motives, and how frequent cannabis use affects sleep health over time
  • Strategies to improve sleep health and engage youth in reducing problematic cannabis use

The therapeutic potential of psychedelic drugs for treatment-resistant conditions including mood disorders has sparked renewed interest among researchers, psychiatrists, and patients. New research and ongoing clinical trials are shedding light on the safety and efficacy of these substances, used in controlled therapeutic settings, for conditions that have been challenging to treat using conventional methods. A growing body of research indicates that several classical psychedelics and “psychedelic-like” compounds (e.g. psilocybin, ketamine, MDMA, and LSD) have shown promise for the treatment of substance use disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Some psychedelic treatments, such as MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD, are currently undergoing phase 3 clinical trials, indicating a significant level of scientific and medical interest in their potential therapeutic applications.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The history of psychedelic therapy and its research
  • The science behind how psychedelic compounds may be targeting clinical conditions, like major depressive disorder
  • The possible benefits and side effects of using psychedelics to conditions after other conventional therapies have failed
  • What questions to ask when considering psychedelic usage in a clinical setting for yourself or loved ones

ADHD doesn’t travel alone. Most teens with ADHD also have a co-occurring condition like anxiety or depression. Sometimes the co-existing condition is a result of the ADHD, and other times it operates alongside ADHD.

When a patient presents these conditions together, it can create a varied clinical picture because each diagnosis impacts, and is impacted by, the other. This can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis or inadequate treatment for at least one condition. The challenge in diagnosis and treatment can also be complicated by puberty.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • The symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders, and how to distinguish them from ADHD and normal child and adolescent development
  • How depression or anxiety affects ADHD symptoms
  • How ADHD can actually lead to, or affect, depression and anxiety
  • How to devise a treatment plan when ADHD exists alongside anxiety or depression

“ADHD in Older Adults: Clinical Guidance and Implications” [Video Replay & Podcast #499] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-in-adults-symptoms-after-50/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-in-adults-symptoms-after-50/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2024 20:32:10 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=349885 Episode Description

ADHD, and its presence in adults over the age of 50, has been explored in international research for the last 15 years. While newly recognized by specialists in clinical practice, ADHD is rarely considered in the diagnostic evaluation of older adults complaining of cognitive symptoms. This webinar will discuss the emerging research and the diagnostic process for evaluating older adults with possible ADHD and distinguishing it from other disorders.

The evaluation and treatment of older adults with ADHD is unique because of coexisting psychiatric and medical illnesses that can exacerbate inattention, distractibility, and disorganization. Both medications and individualized psychotherapies are effective at reducing symptoms, diminishing impairments, and improving quality of life. However, the consideration for medication is complicated by the presence of other conditions, especially cardiac disease. Emerging research suggests that ADHD is a risk factor for dementia. Therefore, the evaluation process is critical in distinguishing the different diagnostic possibilities that explain a patient’s cognitive complaints so that effective treatment options are offered.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How we know that ADHD continues in older adults over age 50
  • How ADHD is distinguished from other medical and psychiatric explanations
  • About the latest findings on ADHD’s possible association with dementia
  • Which treatment options work to improve daily functional ability
  • How ADHD medications can be prescribed safely to older adults

“Health Equity in ADHD: Addressing Racial Disparities in Diagnosis & Treatment” [Video Replay & Podcast #495] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/health-equity-adhd-diagnosis-treatment/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/health-equity-adhd-diagnosis-treatment/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2024 17:16:12 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=347921 Episode Description

Black children and adults with ADHD are less likely to receive an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment due to structural racism, low socioeconomic status, and stigma, all of which can worsen the symptoms of ADHD. Racial disparities in health care are critical to recognize and address because untreated symptoms of ADHD — including learning difficulties, impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity — can lead to harsh punishment of students in school, failure to graduate, substance use, and increased risk for incarceration.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • About risk factors for ADHD in Black individuals
  • About the facets of racism and the present-day policies that impede proper diagnosis, care, and treatment of ADHD in Black communities
  • About the serious consequences associated with untreated ADHD
  • What adults and caregivers of children with ADHD need to know to find appropriate providers and ensure proper care and treatment
  • How adults and caregivers of children with ADHD can effectively address stigma, build trusting relationships with clinicians, and overcome other barriers to treatment
  • About strategies, including Parent Behavioral Training Programs, that can be effective for managing ADHD in families of color

“Eating Disorders Comorbid with ADHD: What You Need to Know About ARFID, Anorexia, and Others” [Video Replay & Podcast #494] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/eating-disorders-adhd-arfid-anorexia/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/eating-disorders-adhd-arfid-anorexia/#comments Tue, 23 Jan 2024 15:44:04 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=347537 Episode Description

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that often go undetected and untreated. An estimated 28 million Americans will struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime, but only some of these individuals will receive the care they need. Given the high rate of comorbidity between eating disorders and ADHD, it’s important for families, caregivers, and individuals with ADHD to be well-informed about the symptoms and treatments for different types of eating disorders. This is particularly true for diagnoses that are relatively new or understudied like atypical anorexia nervosa and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

In this webinar you will learn:

  • About atypical anorexia nervosa and its symptoms
  • About ARFID and its symptoms
  • About strategies that adults and caregivers can deploy to address eating disorders alongside ADHD
  • When to see a specialist to seek further care

“How to ADHD: An Insider’s Guide to Working with Your ADHD Brain (Not Against It!) with Jessica McCabe” [Video Replay & Podcast #491] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-adhd-jessica-mccabe/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/how-to-adhd-jessica-mccabe/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2024 16:38:28 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=345988 Episode Description

“How to ADHD” is a powerhouse. Since launching her YouTube channel in 2015, Jessica McCabe has attracted more than 1.6 million subscribers to her smart, insightful, shame-blasting videos about living with a neurodivergent brain. For many people, Jessica is the face and heart of ADHD.

Diagnosed with ADHD at age 12, Jessica lost things constantly, couldn’t finish projects, and felt like she was investing more effort than everyone around her while falling further and further behind. By her early 30s, she was broke, desperate, and determined to find answers by hyperfocusing wholeheartedly on ADHD research. An actor by trade, she began recording videos to make sense and keep track of what she was learning about her ADHD brain and, in the process, found a community that was also searching for answers and understanding.

Last month, Jessica released her first book, also called How to ADHD. In this special conversation with ADDitude editors, Jessica will discuss themes from her book, including the following:

  • The key she has discovered to navigating a world not built for the neurodivergent brain
  • How the ADHD acronym is misleading and unhelpful for people who have plenty of attention but an inability to focus that attention
  • The economic cost of not treating ADHD, especially in women
  • How she’s learned to pay attention to time in new and effective ways that improve self-time management
  • How to counteract sleep comorbidities like obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, sleepwalking, excessive daytime sleepiness, and more

“The Emotional Lives of Girls with ADHD” [Video Replay & Podcast #488] https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-symptoms-in-girls-emotional-dysregulation/ https://www.additudemag.com/webinar/adhd-symptoms-in-girls-emotional-dysregulation/#comments Wed, 20 Dec 2023 00:31:03 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?post_type=webinar&p=345538 Episode Description

Tantrums, meltdowns, self-harm. These are some of the manifestations of emotional dysregulation in girls with ADHD. During adolescence, the brain and body undergo radical changes that are often associated with stress, depression, and anxiety. Some girls with ADHD begin to struggle academically and socially at school during puberty.

Many girls with ADHD say they feel different, like they don’t fit in. They put a great deal of effort into masking, while they internalize anxiety and depression. Big emotions can feel overwhelming and hard to control. Without proper support, teen girls can spiral into a rabbit hole of inner turmoil and self-doubt.

It’s important for caregivers, educators, and others to understand the special challenges facing girls with ADHD, from fluctuating hormones to social expectations.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • How ADHD brains are wired differently
  • How emotional dysregulation affects ADHD symptoms
  • How hormonal shifts affect mood and worsen ADHD symptoms in girls
  • Mood disorders and other symptoms associated with PMS
  • The consequences of untreated ADHD, often due to clinicians who don’t understand that girls present differently
  • Tools and strategies to enhance understanding and navigating the roller coaster ride of female ADHD
