The ADHD-Dopamine Link: Why You Crave Sugar and Carbs

Mainstream weight-loss plans don't work for us. ADHD brains lack and crave dopamine, which sugar and carbs deliver in spades (or rolls, as the case may be). To get healthy, we first have to get wise — and crafty. Here's how to lose weight the ADD way.

3 Comments: The ADHD-Dopamine Link: Why You Crave Sugar and Carbs

  1. This is a basic diet/ exercise plan for anyone and everyone.
It specifically tells you to set goals and says that you can access dopamine through exercise.
You can’t. You specifically can’t access dopamine via regular methods. I love to exercise but whilst I understand that I’ve met and exceeded goals, I still get no sense of satisfaction or achievement from it.

Meds serve to enable a dopamine access route via stimulation, but they’re also appetite suppressants and it’s a very dangerous ground to suggest utilising meds to enable you to diet.
ADHD is more closely linked to other eating disorders such as bulimia rather than obesity, and many medications are known to exacerbate the symptoms of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

I was looking forwards to reading this article as a fitness enthusiast with quite severe ADHD. I struggle with bulimia, cravings and getting an emotional satisfaction from exercise.

‘running machines are boring but do it faster and slower’ isn’t really an innovative ”how to do it the ADD way” at all.
Can I suggest the author meets someone with ADHD and not write articles based on the ‘struggles’ of feeble-minded people with vague weight loss intentions?

  2. I hesitate sharing these wonderful articles when references are not provided. Over time, research continues to provide new findings. I think it’s important for the reader to be able to access the author’s source(s), to gain perspective and to learn more.

  3. I love your articles and recommend them to others but could we have the references for the research quoted?
